As we sit hiding from mid winter storms and gales, the UTMB quietly opened the gates for 2014… I say quietly, if you are planning on doing any of the 5 races in the series, you will, like me have been eagerly waiting for this moment for weeks… By now all qualifying points are stacked up ready to drop on our race of choice, permission has been granted from family, time off most likely booked from work. All thats left is to get your entry in, so you can start training in earnest. Well you get your entry in and then you have to wait for weeks to hear if you have a place via the ballot, but thats by the by.
I entered last year for the 101km CCC (Courmayeur Champex Chamonix), but like many I didn’t make the ballot so opted instead for the slightly easier 119km TDS (Sur les Traces des Ducs de Savoie). It was the highlight of my summer and despite the pain and sore legs at the time, I can’t wait to go back.
So fingers crossed until January the 15th, when draw is announced. I will be out in the Pennines somewhere following crazy people racing The Spine, so it might be a few days before I know, but at least I will be getting large dosses of inspiration to keep me going in the summer.
