New Year 2016 – #SwimWild & #GetOutside more

The finest light show in the world takes place above the Highlands, to welcome in the New Year.

The finest light show in the world above the Highlands, to welcome in the New Year.

2015 was an amazing year filled with adventures ranging from the Himalayas of Nepal and an earthquake, to a honeymoon on the islands of the west coast of Scotland. So determined to get 2016 of to an even better start and with Katie working all night in A&E, I found a high vantage point with Gru, to watch the northern lights, as they danced through the sky, whilst the bells chimed in the New Year. As we walked home, a flurry of snow started to settle, turning the ground white under a rising moon, it couldn’t have been better (with the exception of Katie not working).

Away from the ice it should be warm..?

Away from the ice, it should be warm..?

Waking to a cold, snow-covered morning, frost hoar covered the trees and there was no chance the sun would make an appearance, to mark the 1st of January and the new year. So walking past a small half frozen loch, Gru and myself asked what better way to mark the new year than a wild swim.

With the light rapidly failing and only the simple iPhone to record our daring do, Gru sampled the water to make sure it was nice and cold, I soon followed keen to flush out the old year and to set the precedent for a new year of adventures… A year dedicated to adventures closer to home, wild swimming and getting outside more.

So as we plan to make use of the opportunities that surround us closer to home and get outside more during 2016, what are your plans for the new year…? Let us know in the comments below, and most importantly… Happy New Year…

  1. Happy New Year buddy! Enjoy following your blog and getting some awesome insights into other possible adventures. Currently saving up for a joint 40th Birthday holiday for my wife and I. Not sure whether it’s Alaska, Mongolia, Tibet, French Polynesia, Easter Island – running, camping, cycling, hiking or swimming. Decisions decisions… ??
Hopefully hit my first ever 100 miler ultra as well his year…

    • Happy New Year! Your first three destination choices are currently my top three countries I must visit. I would love to spend time in Mongolia, looks an amazing place! Good luck on the 100m have you picked one yet? And will it be you or Spiderman running it?

      • Looking at keeping this year’s races local to save the pennies for travel, so signed up for the Glenmore 24 in Aviemore. Never attempted a loop circuit race before. Stunning place and always has an end of year party feel to it and the SUMS 🙂 not the last race in the season but the party one all the same! http://runyabam.com/glenmore-24/
I’ll look forward to seeing what you capture in Mongolia. I almost signed up to running with my pal Doc Andrew Murray, as he’s looking at heading over there and running over a frozen lake towards the Genghis Khan monument.
