International Mountain Day

Dawn breaks over the Himalayas, from the summit of Gokyo Ri.Today is International Mountain Day, a day to reflect on the importance mountains play in our daily life and the world we live in. If you’ve spent any time reading my blog, you will know that spending time in the mountains is a very important part of who I am.

The United Nations General Assembly designated 11 December “International Mountain Day” in 2003, it has been observed every year since in order to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and to build alliances that will bring positive change to mountain peoples and environments around the world.

I’ve spent a considerable amount of time in the mountains over the years, most recently six months, living and working in Nepal with my wife. This time, last year we were returning from working high up in the Himalayas, where we had been running a mountain rescue post. One of the best days from this trip was a morning we spent sat at the top of the Gokyo Ri, we had climbed up from the tiny village of Gokyo to watch the sunrise above Everest and spent several hours sat in the sun, marvelling at the stunning landscape whilst eating boiled eggs and chapati.
